After seeing all the commercials and hearing all the hype about it, I finally decided to give Bing.com a go. Bing is a search engine that finds and organizes the answers you need so you can make faster, more informed decisions. It’s touted as “the new decision engine”. As I kept hearing about Bing, I wondered what could possibly be so grand about this new search engine. What “decisions” can it make for me and what does it do that Google doesn’t? After all, I’ve grown so accustomed to Googling things that its almost second nature. Firefox has that lovely little search box on the top corner, so I don’t even have to go on the Google site to search. So why Bing?
Bing really does organize your searches! Say you’re looking for an image. Mermaid, was my search. A typical search engine will just show you a bunch of images, related or not, that contain “mermaid”, but Bing has this handy side nav that allows you to narrow down your searches by related topics, size, color, layout… That makes my life so much easier! If I’m looking for a black & white illustration of a mermaid, I can narrow it down as such and not have to sort through all the mermaids that come up. Sure, I can just SEARCH for Black & White Mermaid from the get-go, but not everyone labels their images quite that specifically so I can miss out on some. Narrowing down by size is also really helpful, because you can pass on those teeny tiny images that are too small to even look at.
It does the same with videos, you can narrow down by TV show, music, most watched, etc. Looking for some news? Narrow down by US, global, local, health-related (with everyone on the lookout for the swine flu, this can really help narrow down that info).
If you haven’t tried Bing yet, give it a go!
