A collective sigh of relief is heard as web designers can now use more and more fonts without having to convert them into images! If you’re like me, you struggle with picking a font for your site that looks “pretty” or a font that can be used across browsers and platforms without loading problems. Sometimes making text an image is not a huge deal, it might just be a few page titles or part of the header image. However sometimes you want a more stylized font for a trendy site or something that goes better with the overall design. On something like a blog, however, you’re more limited. You don’t want to have to create an image for each post title you write! So you’re stuck with a standard, sometimes ordinary font.
Enter Typekit! Yay (if you can’t tell, I’m really excited about this)! With a simple piece of code, you can access fonts from their growing library to use on your sites. Your end user doesn’t have to have the font loaded on their computer, so you can pretty much use any font they have available, and so far they have a lot. See their font library to preview what’s available.
Typekit offers a free trial as this is a paid service, but they offer several pricing options from single site to multiple sites. AND, Typedia is having a Font Friday Promo today offering a free year of Typekit Portfolio account and a copy of The Typographic Desk Reference to two lucky winners. You have until Nov. 23rd for that so get going!
I can’t wait to try Typekit when I get home today, if you’ve used it, let me know how you like it too!
