I’ve been following Ilise Benum’s Marketing Mentor Quick Tips ever since I read The Designer’s Guide to Marketing and Pricing. Today’s message was particularly noteworthy and I thought I’d share it (with Ilise’s ok, of course):
A New Mindset for 2010
I’ve noticed lately that, no matter how you define success, those who want it have a very different mindset from those who do not.
It’s the difference between taking whatever comes along vs. aiming toward clear goals.
It’s the difference between doing only what you like vs. having the self discipline to do what’s necessary.
This mindset is characterized by objectivity, which came up in a conversation last week with Jon Weiman, who teaches business courses for creatives at Pratt Institute.
He said, “I never talk about me. I talk about the job. I never talk about what I want or what I need. I talk about what’s appropriate to the job.”
Do you have enough distance on your business to be objective about it? If not, for 2010, instead of making New Year’s resolutions, do what you need to get that distance between you and your business.
This is my last Quick Tip of the year so let me thank you for reading and for replying and for just being part of my process in 2009. I do hope we can work together in 2010. When you’re ready, I am here. And if you have questions on other marketing topics, take advantage of the free half hour mentoring session here.
Until next time,

Hopefully we’ll take this opportunity to keep in mind what our goals are for 2010, or to write up some goals if you don’t feel you have clearly defined ones. This is the time to decide what you want, and how you’re going to achieve it. Ilise Benum is a great resource, so do take advantage of her mentoring session.
And in the end, we only get what we put into it so let’s make 2010 the best year so far!
